About the USGA: 

The USGA conducts the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Senior Open, as well as 10 national amateur championships, two state team championships and international matches, attracting players and fans from more than 160 countries. Position Summary: 

Under the direction of the Media Relations Manager, this position supports the execution of the USGA’s public relations strategy that will service the Association’s growing publicity needs of all non-championship related departments, including Marketing, Museum, Regional Affairs, Green Section, Rules and Equipment, Public Services, and Handicapping, while providing PR support to the USGA’s major championship platforms like the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open, U.S. Senior Open, and key amateur events. Delivery of a consistent flow of earned media placements to further strengthen the USGA’s brand awareness and leadership position in the game is the central focus of this position.

What You Can Expect 

  • Support the Manager, Media Relations in executing proactive press strategies that advance the USGA’s brand and reputation with golfers, Members, Member Clubs, state and regional golf associations, allied associations, corporate partners and the general public, with an emphasis on promoting the Association’s governance activities, championships, core services and health of the game initiatives and programs
  • Write and edit press releases and other written material to support the USGA’s PR efforts, and coordinate the approval of all concerned parties involved in the process, as well as the timeliness of distribution
  • Handle media inquiries, working closely with the Media Relations Manager and key Department leaders to ensure that appropriate subject matter experts are presented and prepared for interviews (key messages, message training, etc)
  • Serve as the communications liaison for the USGA between the Association and our corporate partners program and Museum, with the media. Build relationships that can offer enhanced levels of positive media coverage and public awareness, and further the understanding of the USGA throughout the year
  • Help manage media relations processes (e.g., press release distribution, notification, maintaining press contact lists, USGA Daily News Clips, and measurement reporting, etc.) 



What You Bring to the USGA 

  • 5+ years of media relations experience required, preferably in golf or sports;
  • A high energy level and commitment to the 24-7 nature of media engagement;
  • A highly collaborative approach to getting work done - balanced with a commitment to excellence and speed;
  • Knowledge of and experience with news/sports media across a range of sectors, including print, wires, broadcast, internet based and the social media;
  • Favorable relationships with media, with a strong track record of securing positive pitch placements;
  • Outstanding writing and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to prioritize multiple demands on his/her time;
  • Ability to provide counsel on communications issues;
  • External relationship building skills;
  • Ability to design and execute ideas: plan, develop, communicate, track and measure;
  • Working knowledge of key PR technology platforms (Vocus, PRweb, etc.)
