2014 U.S. Open Will Call Intern


About the USGA: 

The USGA conducts the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Senior Open, as well as 10 national amateur championships, two state team championships and international matches, attracting players and fans from more than 160 countries. It serves as a primary steward for the game’s history and invests in the development of the game through the delivery of its services and its ongoing “For the Good of the Game” grants program. Additionally, the USGA’s Course Rating and Handicap systems are used on six continents in more than 50 countries.

Duration of Internship: 

Fifteen to Twenty days

Position Summary: 

Interns are needed for multiple Will Call locations at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club, Pinehurst NC for the 2014 U.S. Open Championships.  Will Call facilities are operated by USGA Staff, Volunteers and Interns. 

  

The purpose of Will Call:  

  • Allow individuals and/or corporate clients to drop off tickets/credentials for their guests to pick up when they arrive at the golf course.
  • Sell and distribute junior tickets.
  • Distribute complimentary Gallery tickets to various organizations.
  • Distribute complimentary and half price practice round tickets to military personnel.
  • Respond to telephone inquiries, exhibit exemplary customer service and provide general support.
  • Deliver Volunteer packages not picked up at training.


What You Can Expect 

  • Assist Volunteers especially during morning hours which are the busiest.
  • Maintain good working relationship with all USGA Staff, the corporate hospitality staff, vendors, security et al.
  • Enter information and maintain Will Call database that connects all Will Calls locations and contains up-to-the-minute information on the envelopes that are dropped off at each Will Call location.
  • Maintain telephone communications with all Will Call locations and various admission gates in case tickets are at another location.
  • Regularly pick up, usually on an hourly basis, envelopes from Will Callboxes that are at different locations throughout the golf course.
  • Answer phone calls from spectators regarding directions, ticket questions, disabled services plus a multitude of miscellaneous questions.
  • Maintain good rapport with Volunteers as well as all spectators.  Be helpful cooperative and courteous when dealing with the public.
 

What You Bring to the USGA 

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Process and detail oriented
  • Basic computer knowledge to use Will Call database
  • Must be presentable, courteous, friendly and organized
  • Ability to work long and strenuous hours
  • Ability to work independently and support the team
  • Able to work well under pressure while accomplishing tasks quickly and thoroughly


Additional Comments: 

Will Call Interns work approximately fifteen to twenty days ending on Sunday, June 22nd, the last day of the Championships. Hours are generally from 9 AM to 5 PM on days preceding the Championships and from 5 AM until 7 PM during the Championships.

 

Each Intern receives four shirts, one outerwear and one cap/hat.  The male Interns are required to wear khaki pants and the female Interns are required to wear khaki pants or just above the knee length shorts. 

 

The USGA pays North Carolina minimum wage.  Expenses such as accommodations or travel are not covered.  However, all meals are included.
