James R. Watson received a B.S. in agronomy from Texas A&M University in 1947, and a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University in 1950. After graduation he was appointed assistant professor of the Department of Agronomy at Texas A&M, where he taught courses in soil and pasture management and conducted turfgrass research. He joined the Toro Company in 1952 as Director of Agronomy. He rose to the position of Vice President, Customer Relations and Agronomist with the Toro Company. Dr. Watson's work encompassed the areas of equipment development and evaluation, customer relations and agronomic consultation.

Dr. Watson conducted early research on: Adaptability of turfgrass species/cultivars; fertilization practices; snow mold prevention; and techniques for winter protection. He has authored over 400 popular articles on turfgrass cultural practices and water conservation. Some of the various honors he has received include the 1979 Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy and the Crop Science Society of America; the 1976 USGA Green Section Award; the 1977 Agronomic Service Award by the American Society of Agronomy; the 1991 Harry Gill Memorial Award of the Sports Turf Managers Association; and the 1995 Old Tom Morris Award of the Golf Course Superintendents Society of America.

Dr. Watson has been a member of the Turfgrass and Environmental Research Committee since 1982.

At U.S. Open Championships the Chevron STEM ZONE™ is an interactive experience highlighting the science and math behind the game of golf through a variety of hands-on exhibits and experiments.

The partnership has also produced educational materials such as the Science of Golf video series and a nationally-distributed newspaper insert which are provided to teachers as tools to enhance existing curriculum in schools. These lessons teach the science behind the USGA’s equipment testing, handicapping, and agronomy efforts.
