The use of distance-measuring devices (DMDs) during a round of golf has been allowed since 2006 only when an optional Local Rule is introduced by a golf course or the committee in charge of a specific competition. In an effort to serve the entire golf community, the USGA developed this resource page to provide comprehensive information to players, officials and other golf entities about what is and is not allowed when it comes to the use of DMDs.

Beginning in 2014, the USGA permitted the use of DMDs in all USGA amateur championships and their respective qualifying events.
