U.S. AMATEUR
Wilson Shoots 10-Under 62 To Lead August 22, 2010 By USGA

University Place, Wash. – Jeff Wilson, a 47-year-old car dealer from Fairfield, Calif., shot a 10-under-par 62 to gain a seven-stroke lead over nine players after the first day of stroke play at the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship.

Wilson, who was the low amateur at the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links, registered seven birdies and two eagles with one bogey on The Home Course in Dupont, Wash. (7,240 yards, par 72), to notch the second-lowest stroke-play score in U.S. Amateur history. The lowest score is 60 by Billy Horschel at Chaska (Minn.) Town Course at the 2006 U.S. Amateur.

I was a little jittery on my first hole (No.10), Wilson said. But, I made three pretty nice putts right in the center on 10, 11 and 12 and that helped me calm down there.

Wilson, who has been the stroke-play medalist at four USGA championships (2000 U.S. Amateur and 2000, 2001 and 2004 U.S. Mid-Amateur) finished with two consecutive eagles to post a second-nine score of 29, which tied a USGA record for amateur championships. Previously, four other players (three males, one female) had shot 29 for nine holes.

On the par-5 eighth hole, he hit a 3-wood from 262 yards to 8 feet and made the putt and then holed a 134-yard wedge on the par-4 ninth.

I’m still trying to figure out what happened, Wilson said. Finishing eagle-eagle didn’t hurt. I made a lot of putts. I made all the putts I should have made and a few that I shouldn’t have.

Wilson is playing in his ninth U.S. Amateur and is a two-time semifinalist at the U.S.  Mid-Amateur (2001 and 2002).

Patrick Reed, a member of Augusta State’s NCAA Division I Men’s national championship team, led the group of eight others who trailed Wilson.

Reed, a semifinalist at the 2008 U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst (N.C.) No. 2, carded a 3-under-par 68 at Chambers Bay, the lowest score on the fescue-grass links that borders Puget Sound near Tacoma. At 7,742 yards and par 71, Chambers Bay is the longest course in USGA history.

Reed, 20, of Augusta, Ga., who posted three birdies and an eagle against two bogeys, holed an 8-iron shot on the par-4 14th from 180 yards.

I had pretty good momentum after (the eagle), Reed said. I only had one or two bad swings today and only one of them hurt me. If you play solid, you can shoot pretty low. Sixty-eight out here is pretty low. There are not a lot of birdie holes out here. I was able to take advantage of the par 5s, which is a big key.

University of Washington player Nick Taylor, 22, of Canada, who was the low amateur at the 2009 U.S. Open and won the 2010 Ben Hogan Award as the nation’s top golfer, and seven others shot 3-under-par 69 at The Home Course (7,420-yards, par 72). Those players are: Max Homa, 19, of Valencia, Calif.; Richard Werenski, 18, of South Hadley, Mass.; John Hahn, 21, of Las  Vegas, Nev.; John Duke Hudson, 19, of Sonora, Texas; Harris English, 21, of Athens, Ga.; Daniel Berger, 17, of Jupiter, Fla.; and Michael Morrison, 32, of Atlanta, Ga.

Byeong-Hun ‘Ben’ An, the 2009 U.S.  Amateur champion, shot 2-under-par 70 at The Home Course.

Play was suspended due to darkness at 8:17 p.m. PDT with 15 players still on the course. The first round of stroke play will resume at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

The U.S. Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, which include the U.S. Open, U.S.  Women’s Open, U.S. Senior Open and 10 strictly for amateurs.
