The Manager, Championship Communications is an integral member of the USGA Championship Communications team and is responsible for overseeing or assisting with championship communications efforts. This role’s primary emphasis is the media relations and media center operations at select USGA national championships and team events. This individual drafts original press release content and helps coordinate media coverage of the organization throughout the year. The role is also responsible for coordinating select USGA qualifying coverage and requires leadership experience covering high profile events.

What You Can Expect:

  • Assist the Director with the media relations and media center operations at USGA championships and team events (on and off site), as assigned (to include as many as six per year). Help coordinate the delivery of media relations materials and on-site coverage at the championships not assigned to attend in person. Serve as point of contact for media center operations for select USGA championships. Coordinate Championship Preview days for USGA championships and team events as assigned.
  • Assists in editing/proofreading/fact-checking editorial articles, particularly those related to USGA championships, as well as news releases, to ensure accuracy and consistency of USGA style and usage.
  • Coordinates production of the USGA Championships Media Guide.
  • Assist with special projects, including support of senior leadership for speaking preparation at public appearances as requested.
  • Coordinates the production and deployment of press releases through Cision distribution program. Manages distribution lists and reports in Cision system.
  • Oversee development and maintenance of player informational bios database for USGA championships. Work with BIS department regarding development; work with USGA communications and championship staff regarding implementation; work with players regarding completion.
  • Additional duties assigned as needed.

 

What You Bring to the USGA:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Media Relations, Journalism, Business Administration or related field required
  • 8 years of relevant work experience in a professional communications function
  • Journalism, media/public relations, writing, and event planning experiential skills required
  • Strong interpersonal, problem solving, organizational skills required
  • Experience with large and simultaneous project planning and implementation
  • Positive attitude and the ability to display consistent initiative that reflects a fresh approach and new ideas
  • Strong computer skills (Word, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, PowerPoint, Cision, e-mail admin software and internal CMS (utilizing basic HTML knowledge) required
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills required
  • Must be detail and deadline oriented with the ability to problem-solve and be particularly mindful of factual accuracy and branding consistency
  • Golf knowledge and passion for the sport highly preferred
  • Travel: 70+ days per year required
