Assistant Director, Green Section Research

Assist in the execution and management of the USGA Turfgrass and Environmental Research Program – a global program focused on improving sustainability, turfgrass science principles and golf course management practices. The USGA Green Section develops and disseminates sustainable management practices that produce better playing conditions for better golf.

What You Can Expect:

Research Management

  • Work with the Director of Research, with input from the Turfgrass and Environmental Research Committee, to determine research needs and priorities and develop a long-range work plan to achieve objectives.
  • Assist with collection, coordination, editing, layout, and online publication of the annual research summaries for all the current USGA-funded projects by the Turfgrass and Environmental Research Program.
  • Coordinate and work with university professors to develop and edit articles for publication in the USGA Green Section Record.
  • Attend scheduled research committee meetings and research visits to funded universities, as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Green Section Education group to plan and develop multi-media educational materials promoting Turfgrass and Environmental Research Program outcomes.
  • Cultivate relationships with key researchers within the global scientific community.
  • Coordinate and collaborate research efforts with the USGA Research, Science and Innovation group.
  • Develop regular updates for the Green Section staff to assist them on remaining current on research program activities.
  • Represent the USGA at scientific, environmental, and educational meetings and conferences, as needed.


Program Administration

  • Collaborate with the Director of Research to develop, publicize and administer regular research call for proposals
  • Coordinate the collection, evaluation and dispersal of proposals reserved for Green Section research funds.
  • Work with the USGA Legal department to administer and complete timely contracts with universities for all projects exceeding $3,000 per year.
  • Work with USGA Accounting staff to make timely, scheduled payments to all funded universities within the Research Program budget.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date project and budget records
  • Remain current in turf-related literature associated with the USGA Turfgrass and Environmental Research Program and the sport-related turfgrass industry.
  • Maintain a fundamental understanding of the USGA strategic plan and goals for a culture of excellence.
  • Develop a broad understanding of the department strategic plan and provide insight on the research component and direction
  • Prepare necessary departmental communications and briefs, as needed.
  • Assist with other departmental activities and projects, as assigned.


What You Bring to the USGA:

  • Ph.D. in agronomy, horticulture, biology or related field with an emphasis in turfgrass science required.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and maintaining a proactive, viable turfgrass research program, including publications. (minimum of four years)
  • Strategic vision for issues impacting the industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to gather, analyze, and synthesize information. Must have excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare compelling materials, including proposals, reports, and letters.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, people skills and editing abilities required with strong attention to detail. This skill set includes a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate scientific information written for a non-technical audience.
  • Ability to collaborate and build relationships with a broad range of external constituents.
  • Work well independently.
  • Golf course management experience and knowledge of the golf community (preferred).
  • The position will be located in our Green Section regional offices. Eg. (Columbus, OH; Dallas, TX, Atlanta, GA, Easton, PA, Philadelphia, PA)
  • Up to 15% travel is required.
