The biennial international competition began in the wake of World War I as a way to stimulate golf interest on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. The first Match took place in 1922 and was held annually for three years before becoming a biennial competition featuring the best amateur players from the United States of America and Great Britain and Ireland.
