The World's Largest And Most Complete Golf Library
The USGA Library is unrivaled in the world, containing more than 20,000 volumes that document the history of the game from its origins to the present. One can find books on all aspects of the game, including history, rules, instruction, equipment, biography, records, travel, club histories, literature and reference. The periodical collection encompasses more than 800 bound volumes, as well as some 10,000 unbound issues representing more than 100 titles dating back to the 1800s. The Library contains the personal writings and papers of some of the game's greatest personalities, including Robert T. Jones Jr., Walter J. Travis and Peter Dobereiner.
Two Web-based resources provide access to the collection and the rich literary traditions of the game. The library catalog contains records for each volume in the vast collection. Users can search by keyword, title, author, subject, publication date and type of publication. Please note that the subject headings do not correspond to the Library of Congress subject headings. Rather the Library's classification system was created to reflect the uniqueness of the collection and the historiography of golf. Please use the subject headings as a guide as you navigate the catalog. The catalog is updated on a regular basis.
Researchers also have an opportunity to browse some of the rarest books from the collection through the Seagle Electronic Golf Library (SEGL). Named in honor of Janet Seagle, the Museum's first Curator, SEGL contains PDF files of books that are no longer available to researchers due to preservation concerns. Users with Adobe Acrobat will be able to read and text-search these early publications.
The Library is open by appointment, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The facility is closed on weekends and national holidays. To schedule an appointment to use the collections, please call the Library at (908) 234-2300 or send an e-mail to library@usga.org.
