Gilhuly has been associated with the game of golf since 1959 as a player, caddie and golf course maintenance worker. After receiving an Evans Caddie Scholarship in 1970, he attended the University of Washington for two-and-a-half years and then transferred to Washington State University where he graduated in 1975. He majored in Agronomy, Turf Science and holds a B.S. degree.

After college, he worked as the Assistant Superintendent at Seattle Golf Club from 1975-1983. After a brief tenure as the golf course superintendent, he joined the USGA Green Section in 1983 as the Western Director. Gilhuly currently provides agronomic advice to golf courses in Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. British Columbia also receives TAS visits from his Gig Harbor, Wash., based office.

In addition to assisting golf courses in their turf management programs, he also helps conduct several regional conferences within his region, assists the Northwest Turfgrass Association in fund raising efforts and is involved in several educational programs that are directed at golfers in the Pacific Northwest.

Since 2000 he has been the golf coach for the boys' and girls' golf team at Peninsula High School.
