Through its Grants Initiative, the USGA empowers organizations that introduce the game to people who would otherwise not have the opportunity, specifically economically disadvantaged youth and individuals with disabilities. Grant awards are directed to instructional programs, caddie or other work-based curriculums, and the construction of facilities that make the game more affordable and accessible.

2003 Grants

In 2003, $5,751,924 was awarded to 222 organizations that demonstrate quality operations and fiscal planning. These programs plan to reach over 200,000 kids and individuals with disabilities with the assistance of USGA grants. Since 1997, when the USGA committed $50 million over 10 years to this grants initiative, more than $38 million has been awarded to efforts around the nation aimed at teaching individuals not only the sport of golf, but also the valuable life lessons inherent in the game.

The USGA strongly believes in taking a hands-on approach with partner organizations during the application process and throughout program implementation. The USGA assists supported programs with public relations, obtaining equipment, and fiscal planning. Grant recipients receive in-kind donations of USGA merchandise for fundraising and rules publications for use in educating their participants. In 2003, the USGA hosted the first Pikes Peak Summit. This gathering of 300 grant recipients was held to promote and exchange best practices and solutions for operating quality golf programs and facilities.

Additionally, this past year, the USGA conducted a survey of past grant recipients in an effort to assess the level of success they have achieved over the last seven years. Many of the more than 600 organizations that have received grants from the USGA responded. The results showed that these programs have, over time, improved in areas such as fundraising, participant reach, program length and providing increased amounts of golf course access at lower costs.

The USGA believes that the true essence of a quality program rests with its local leadership, those passionate individuals who make the program a success on every level. We believe in these local champions and help empower them by increasing their effectiveness, positive impact and lasting ability to teach life lessons through the game of golf.
