Connecticut


Junior Golf Programs

Boys and Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley
Shelton, Conn.
Awarded: $20,000
Purpose: This grant supports a new program that will teach golf year-round to youths from the Lower Naugatuck Valley of Connecticut. Approximately 100 kids are expected to partake in programming in the next year. USGA funds will be used for instruction and driving range access.

Junior Golf Programs

McDonald's Kids Charities
Rockland, Del.
Awarded: $32,500
Purpose: This grant supports a new program that aims to expose more than 400 youths in northern Maryland to the game of golf. The program will reach economically disadvantaged youths in a rural community. USGA funds will be used for instruction, golf course and range access, golf clubs and bags, and transportation.

Golf Facilities

Maine Youth Golf Foundation, Inc.
Portland, Maine
Awarded: $40,000
Purpose: This grant supports the construction of a new 4-hole short course facility for The First Tee of Maine. The course will serve over 300 kids annually once it is constructed. USGA funds will be used for the construction of tees and greens, and irrigation.

Junior Golf Programs

Calais Parks & Recreation Department
Calais, Maine
Awarded: $7,400
Purpose: This grant supports the continued growth of the Calais Parks and Recreation Department junior golf program. Approximately 40 youths in a rural community will take part in an eight-week program. USGA funds will be used for instruction, golf course access, and transportation.

Northern Maine Development Commission, Inc.
Caribou, Maine
Awarded: $8,500
Purpose: This matching grant supports the development of the CANUSA Youth Golf Program, operated under the Northern Maine Development Commission. Approximately 50 youths will take part in this spring and summer program which is not only designed to teach kids how to play the game, but to improve the community as a whole. Specifically, USGA grant funds will assist with equipment, course access, and instruction costs.

Junior Golf Programs

Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation
Baltimore, Md.
Awarded: $3,000
Purpose: This two-year matching grant supports a program that teaches golf to kids at the Hartford Elementary School. Approximately 77 kids will participate in the program. USGA funds will be used for transportation costs.

Ocean City, Md.

Purpose: This grant supports a new program that will serve kids in the Ocean City, MD area. Approximately 40 participants will take part in this program over the summer months. The Salvation Army, Baltimore Area Command
Baltimore, Md.

Purpose: This grant supports two instructional components for the Grow Through Golf Program. One operates year-round and serves 20 disadvantaged kids while the other offers summer clinics that introduce an additional 70 participants to golf. USGA funds will be used for instruction, range access, and transportation.

Purpose: This grant supports a program that will introduce kids involved with the Boys and Girls Club of Cape Cod to the game of golf through a summer program. Approximately 40 kids will be served by this program. USGA funds will be used for instruction, golf course access, driving range access, golf clubs and bags, outdoor equipment, and transportation.

Purpose: This grant supports three The First Tee of Massachusetts chapters in summer programming. Approximately 3,400 kids are expected to take part in these programs in 2006. USGA funds will be ued for instruction, golf course access, range access, transportation, and golf clubs and bags.

Purpose: This grant supports programs that will teach golf to adolescents in the greater Boston area during the winter and spring. Approximately 200 kids will take part in this new program. USGA funds will be used for instruction, equipment, and course access outside of programming.

Program for Individuals with Disabilities

Rehabilitation Hospital of the Cape and Islands
East Sandwich, Mass.
Awarded: $21,000
Purpose: This three-year matching grant supports a program that introduces rehabilitation hospital patients to the game of golf. The three programs -- Back in the Swing, Back on Course, and the Pilot Pediatric Program -- use therapists and golf professionals to ensure that participants are receiving specialized instruction. Approximately 80 participants will take part in the program in the spring and summer of 2006. USGA funds will be used for instruction, course access, range access, therapist wages and training, equipment, and transportation.

School-Operated Programs

Worcester Public Schools
Worcester, Mass.
Awarded: $8,650
Purpose: This grant supports a new school program that will serve students at Burncoat Middle School. The first portion of programming will introduce all students to the basics of golf. The second, third, and fourth components will include more intense training and will incorporate a caddie program. Approximately 600 kids will be served by the golf program in the 2006-2007 school year. USGA funds will be used for instruction, golf clubs and bags, transportation, and membership fees to the local golf course.

New Hampshire


Junior Golf Programs

The Seacoast Golf Academy Inc.
North Hampton, N.H.
Awarded: $20,000
Purpose: This grant supports the Spring, Summer, and Fall programs operated by The First Tee of the Seacoast. Approximately 450 kids will take part in these programs in 2006. USGA funds will be used for instruction, golf clubs, and transportation.

Program for Individuals with Disabilities

National Amputee Golf Association
Amherst, N.H.
Awarded: $20,000
Purpose: This grant supports The First Swing program and the USGA Army Hospital Pilot program. The First Swing program will introduce the game to individuals with disabilities at 42 sites this year and will teach physical and recreation therapists, as well as local golf professionals, how to teach golf specifically to this population. The USGA Army Hospital Pilot program will open two new sites at Fort Carson in Colorado and Forth Bragg in North Carolina and will offer programming to wounded soldiers based on The First Swing model.

Junior Golf Programs

Boys and Girls Clubs of Gloucester County, Inc.
Glassboro, N.J.
Awarded: $5,000
Purpose: This matching grant supports the after-school golf program at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Gloucester County. The program will introduce 20 economically disadvantaged participants to golf in both the fall and spring. Participants will receive instruction at a driving range in addition to on-course playing opportunitities. USGA funds will be used for instruction, access, and equipment costs.

Greater Trenton Junior Golf, Inc.

Awarded: $30,000
Purpose: This grant supports the expansion of the Greater Trenton Junior Golf Program. Approximately 300 youths from the urban Trenton area will have the opportunity to learn the game of golf through this year-long program. USGA funds will be used for instruction, golf course and range access, golf clubs and bags, and transportation.

Purpose: This grant supports a program that reaches youths at after-school programs throughout the state of New Jersey. The program will teach after-school lessons and provide course access for approximately 150 economically disadvantaged participants. Program for Individuals with Disabilities

Special Olympics New Jersey, Inc.

Awarded: $10,000
Purpose: This grant supports the expansion of the Special Olympics New Jersey golf program. Approximately 150 new Special Olympics athletes will benefit from participating in one of five levels of competition training. USGA funds will be used to pay for course and range access.

Golf Facilities

Metropolitan Golf Association Foundation
Elmsford, N.Y.
Awarded: $55,000
Purpose: This grant supports the construction of a short course and practice facility at The First Tee of Essex County. Approximately 250 economically disadvantaged youths in Newark, New Jersey, and surrounding areas will have access to the facility. USGA funds will by used for synthetic tees and putting surfaces.

Metropolitan Golf Association Foundation
Elmsford, N.Y.
Awarded: $24,000
Purpose: This grant supports the construction of a practice area at the Fairchild-Wheeler Golf Course in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Approximately 1,200 participants will have access to the area which will feature a practice putting green and bunker. USGA funds will be used for the synthetic putting surface.

Awarded: $20,000
Purpose: This grant supports the construction of two putting greens and four tees at The First Tee of Nassau County. The program reaches approximately 850 participants annually. The addition of the new greens will allow for a short game practice area and the tees will allow for the area to be used as a short course.

Purpose: This matching grant supports a program that will partner with The First Tee Hiawatha Landing to teach golf to Boys and Girls Club participants. Approximately 125 kids will take part in this program. USGA funds will be used for instruction, course access, transportation, and scholarships.

Purpose: This grant supports the expansion of the City Parks Foundation junior golf program. This program introduces youths from the New York City burroughs to the game of golf by operating programming in New York City parks. USGA funds will used for instruction.

Purpose: This grant supports a school-based program that introduces kids with learning disabilities to the game of golf. Instruction is provided in gym classes and at a local golf course. The Greater Philadelphia Scholastic Golf Association
Philadelphia, Pa.
Awarded: $20,000
Purpose: This grant supports the start of a work program aimed at introducing 20 participants involved with The First Tee of Philadelphia to careers in the golf industry. Participants will work in a myriad of positions at golf courses and clubs throughout the city. USGA funds will be used for intern wages.

Heart of Variety Fund
Philadelphia, Pa.
Awarded: $55,000
Purpose: This grant supports the construction of the Vincent N. Mariniello Golf Course at the Variety Club campsite just northeast of Philadelphia. The course will feature a three-hole layout and driving range. The Variety Club reaches nearly 400 participants each year who have developmental or physical disabilities. USGA funds will be used for the construction of synthetic putting greens.

Junior Golf Programs

Embrace Your Dreams
Lehigh Valley, Pa.
Awarded: $12,000
Purpose: This grant funds a program that reaches more than 700 participants in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. The program has three locations, including a newly constructed "birdie-ball" course in the Marvine Housing Project in Bethlehem. USGA funds will be used for instuction.

The Greater Philadelphia Scholastic Golf Association
Philadelphia, Pa.
Awarded: $40,000
Purpose: This grant supports the introduction of an after-school golf program at 10 locations throughout Philadelphia. The program will reach 880 new participants. Most are from economically disadvantaged households, and nearly all of the participants are beginner golfers. USGA funds will be used to support instruction, course access, and equipment costs.

Purpose: This grant supports the junior golf programs at the Button Hole facility. These programs operate in the spring, summer, and fall, serving approximately 1,600 kids. USGA funds will be used for instruction, golf course access, range access, and transportation.
