2006 National Grants

These Grants were made to assist organizations in operating throughout the country.

Dollar awards represent total monies committed by the USGA. Some awards take the form of multi-year grants while others are challenge grants. The organizations listed as the grantees represent the legal applicant of the grant, which is not always the same as the program name for which the grant was awarded.



Junior Golf Programs

Institute for International Sport
Kingston, R.I.
Awarded: $20,000
Purpose: This grant supports the 2006 World Scholar Athlete Games by providing scholarships for 20 kids from USGA-supported programs to attend the Games. The event includes world-renowned speakers, leadership development seminars, and golf instruction and competition with kids from over 100 countries. USGA funds will cover all registration and travel costs for the scholarship recipients.

LPGA Foundation
Daytona Beach, Fla.
Awarded: $175,000
Purpose: This grant supports the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf initiative, a joint partnership between the USGA and the LPGA Foundation. In 2006, Girls Golf is projected to expand to over 190 sites and to reach 5,500 girls nationwide. This grant will be allocated to local sites as matching grant awards to help cover costs associated with golf course and driving range access, equipment, and professional instruction.

National Alliance for Youth Sports
West Palm Beach, Fla.
Awarded: $100,000
Purpose: This grant supports local matching grants for the Hook A Kid On Golf Tee Level clinics. The week-long clinics, developed by the National Alliance for Youth Sports, provide beginner-level instruction and a free set of starter clubs for participants. Up to 2,000 youths nationwide will receive free programming through this matching grant program. USGA funds will be provided, up to $1,000 per clinic, to pay the $100 program fee for economically disadvantaged youth.

National Golf Course Owners Association
Charleston, S.C.
Awarded: $200,000
Purpose: This grant supports the Kids On Course program which provides participants in USGA-supported programs the opportunity to receive $1 green fees at select NGCOA member courses during off-peak hours. The program currently involves 105 USGA-supported programs and more than 5,000 participants. In 2006, the program projects to create an additional 60 matches of USGA-supported programs and NGCOA member courses. USGA funding will specifically cover costs associated with promotional materials and a portion of the salary for the NGCOA Player Development Coordinator.

Program for Individuals with Disabilities

Special Olympics International
Awarded: $25,000
Purpose: This grant supports the National Invitational Tournament which will be held at the first-ever Special Olympics National Games in July of 2006. Approximately 200 golfers will take part in the event. USGA funds will be used for all costs associated with running the week-long golf tournament.

United States Blind Golf Association
Nashville, Tenn.
Awarded: $12,400
Purpose: This grant supports a national program that introduces blind and visually impaired individuals to the game of golf. Clinics and ongoing programs will be held throughout the country. Approximately 300 individuals will take part. USGA funds will be used for instruction, golf course access, and transportation.

United States Deaf Golf Association
Chesapeake Beach, Md.
Awarded: $25,000
Purpose: This grant supports the Physical Education Golf program, the Leadership Summit, and the U.S. Deaf Golf Camps. The goal of all programs offered is to increase the number of golfers from the deaf community as players and teachers of the game. USGA funds will support golf instruction, course and range access, and adaptive equipment.

Other

American Society of Golf Course Architects
Brookfield, Wis.
Awarded: $15,000
Purpose: This request was to fund the printing costs for the American Society of Golf Course Architect's publication entitled, " An Environmental Approach to Golf Course Development".
