The organizations listed as the grantees represent the legal applicant of the grant, which is not always the same as the program name for which the grant was awarded.



Alabama


Junior Golf Programs

Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Alabama Inc.
Ozark, Ala.
Awarded: $23,000
Purpose: This matching grant supports a new Boys and Girls Club pilot program. Programming will reach 50 youths from its Ozark, AL site and will operate three to four days a week for 34 weeks. The goals of the program are to enable youth from disadvantaged circumstances an opportunity to be exposed to the game of golf as well as learn skills, rules, and etiquette. Funds will be used for instruction, access, and equipment.

Boys and Girls Clubs of South Alabama
Mobile, Ala.
Awarded: $7,000
Purpose: This challenge grant supports the Boys and Girls Club of South Alabama implementing a pilot program in five of its 17 existing sites. Approximately 70 economically-disadvantaged youths will participate in summer programming meeting 15 times, for two hours a session. Additionally, the program will have a strong emphasis on leadership and team-building seminars. Funds will be used for instruction, course and range access, and golf clubs and bags.

City of Gadsden
Gadsden, Ala.
Awarded: $3,400
Purpose: This matching grant supports the implementation of a pilot junior golf program during the city's summer camps. Programming will operate once a week for eight weeks, meeting two hours per day. Twenty-five economically disadvantaged youths will be reached during the year. USGA funds will be used for golf clubs and bags, course access, driving range access, and instruction.

Greater Montgomery Youth Golf Association
Montgomery, Ala.
Awarded: $18,000
Purpose: This challenge grant will support the year-round Montgomery First Tee program. Nearly 440 youths will participate in the program and will be recruited from 10 YMCAs within Montgomery County. USGA funds will be allocated toward PGA instruction, access scholarships, and transportation.

Right Start Junior Golf Academy
Montgomery, Ala.
Awarded: $8,000
Purpose: This grant will help support the expansion of Right Start Junior Golf's spring and summerprogramming. USGA grant funds will support instruction as well as driving range and course access for 40 youth in the Montgomery area. Right Start teaches youth the game of golf and life skills while promoting academic excellence in school, as expressed in their motto, "Starting right in golf and life."

Tennessee Valley Jazz Society
Huntsville, Ala.
Awarded: $5,300
Purpose: This grant will support costs associated with course access, transportation, and golf clubs and bags for the Tennessee Valley Youth Golf Development junior golf program. The program will consist of a four-week summer session, meeting four days a week for four hours per day. The program plans to reach 50 inner-city youths from the Huntsville area.

The First Tee of Birmingham
Birmingham, Ala.
Awarded: $25,000
Purpose: This grant supports course access and instruction costs for TFT Birmingham's junior golf program. This program expects to reach 3,000 youths with in-school, after-school, and summer programming as well as weekend clinics. Programming currently takes place at Highland Park Golf Course, but will move to its own facility once construction is completed in June 2004.

On Even Par
Holt, Ala.
Awarded: $11,500
Purpose: This grant will help support On Even Par's two beginner and intermediate sessions.Specifically, USGA grant funds will support driving range access, course access, equipment, and instruction. On Even Par was founded to develop, implement, and administer a multi-faceted educational program to increase access to the game of golf for individuals with disabilities. On Even Par provides clinical and therapeutic golf lessons for approximately 36 people with disabilities while educating PGA instructors and golf professionals throughout Alabama on golf couse accessibility through seminar series.

Golf Facilities

YMCA of West Central Florida
Lakeland, Fla.
Awarded: $100,000
Purpose: This grant supports the general construction costs of The First Tee of Lakeland at YMCA's 9-hole, par-3 course. The First Tee of Lakeland will be constructing and renovating the Publix Supermarket 45-year old lighted, tradition-based facility. The golf course and program anticipate reaching more than 1,000 youths each year, as well as 1,500 seniors, individuals with disabilities, college students, and parents.

Junior Golf Programs


Boys and Girls Club of Alachua County
Gainesville, Fla.
Awarded: $2,500
Purpose: This grant will help to start-up a junior golf program at the Boys and Girls Club ofAlachua County. Specifically, USGA funds will go towards the creation of a club program that will operate during regular club hours during the week by assisting with equipment and instruction, as well as course and range access costs. The Boys and Girls Club of Alachua county will provide golf programming to 100 club members as an addition to other sports activities to create more diversified program offerings for the 100% African-American club membership. The club also has plans to add the golf program to its Endeavor Program which targets physically and mentally challenged children.

Boys and Girls Club of Charlotte, Inc.
Port Charlotte, Fla.
Awarded: $12,000
Purpose: This challenge grant supports a program that will meet five days a week for eight weeks. Approximately 105 youths recruited from Charlotte County, located on the Gulf Coast, will take part in the program. The majority of participants will be on the free-or-reduced lunch program and beginner golfers. USGA funds will be used for instruction, transportation, and golf clubs and bags.

Boys and Girls Club of Collier County, Florida, Inc.
Naples, Fla.
Awarded: $8,500
Purpose: This challenge grant supports the creation of a new Boys and Girls Club junior golf program. Nearly 350 youths will receive golf instruction at the Boys and Girls Club. Additionally, 30 interested youths will receive lessons on the driving range as well as play a few rounds of golf at a local course. USGA funds will be used for instruction, course and driving range access, equipment, and transportation.

Boys and Girls Club of Miami, Inc.
Miami, Fla.
Awarded: $15,000
Purpose: This challenge grant will support a junior golf program with participants from three Boys and Girls Clubs within the city of Miami. Programming will operate for 12 weeks throughout the summer and will be held at Melreese Golf Club, the official home of The First Tee of Miami. Forty-five youths are expected to benefit from this grant, and USGA funds will be used for PGA instruction, course and range access, equipment, and transportation.

City of St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg, Fla.
Awarded: $10,000
Purpose: This grant will help support the continuation of the City of St. Petersburg and AcademyPrep's junior golf program. Specifically, USGA funds will support the after-school and summer programming sessions by assisting with instruction, course and driving range access, and transportation costs. Academy Prep is a tuition -free, private, multi-faceted learning center offering many programs designed to give economically disadvantaged youth a chance for success. 115 youths, primarily from target redevelopment areas of St. Petersburg, will be reached through summer and after-school programs.

Mayor's Drug Free Communities
Sarasota, Fla.
Awarded: $60,000
Purpose: This grant award will allow The First Tee of Sarasota/Manatee to significantly expand its current junior golf program by increasing the number of sites offering the program as well as the types of programming offered. TFT of Sarasota/Manatee plans on reaching 3,000 youths annually. The grant award will support instruction, course and range access, golf clubs and bags, and transportation.

North Florida Section PGA
Tampa, Fla.
Awarded: $20,000
Purpose: This grant supports continued course access opportunities for nearly 125 schools inNorthern Florida. The "Swing Into School" golf program is projected to reach more than 50,000 students in the upcoming year.

Smart School
Lauderhill, Fla.
Awarded: $45,000
Purpose: This three-year grant will support Smart School's, The First Tee of Lauderhill golfprogram. The program is anticipated to reach 200 youths within Broward County Florida in this upcoming year. USGA funds will be allocated toward certified instruction, transportation, and equipment in all three years.

South Florida Junior Golf Academy, Inc.
Plantation, Fla.
Awarded: $19,000
Purpose: This grant will enable South Florida Junior Golf Academy to offer PGA instruction to 700 youths in five schools within Broward County Florida. The program will operate over 24 weeks and its goal is to introduce golf to all students in second through fifth grade. USGA funds will support instructor wages and course access fees.

The First Tee of Jacksonville, Inc.
Jacksonville, Fla.
Awarded: $25,000
Purpose: This grant will support The First Tee of Jacksonville (TFTJ)'s year-round program which is anticipated to reach more than 1,100 youths. The majority of participants come from poverty-stricken families and nearly 85% are beginner golfers. This is TFTJ's second USGA grant, and USGA funds will be allocated toward certified instruction and golf clubs and bags.

Program for Individuals with Disabilities

Children's Golf Foundation of Miami Springs, Inc.
Miami Springs, Fla.
Awarded: $50,000
Purpose: This grant supports a year-round program that serves individuals with disabilities throughout the Miami-Dade County School system. Programming will operate on a specially outfitted 3-hole golf course which will be constructed on a portion of the Miami Springs Golf Course. Nearly 1,200 youths will benefit from this grant, and USGA funds will be allocated for PGA instruction and golf clubs and bags.

Special Olympics Florida
Saint Augustine, Fla.
Awarded: $18,000
Purpose: This matching grant will enable 40 individuals with disabilities to participate in a golf program held at two The First Tee sites in northeast Florida. USGA funds will specifically be allocated to instruction, course access, and equipment. Both The First Tee of St. Johns and The First Tee of Jacksonville, where programming will be held, have received USGA grants in the past.

Junior Golf Programs

DeKalb County
Decatur, Ga.
Awarded: $25,000
Purpose: This matching grant will help support DeKalb County's beginner golf program. Two-hundred youths will participate in a three-month program, meeting two days a week. Youth will learn the basic fundamentals of the game, life skills, and rules and etiquette. The majority of participants are beginner golfers, African American and on the free-or-reduced lunch program. USGA funds will be used for instruction, golf clubs and bags, range access, and transportation.

Friends of John A. White Park, Inc.
Atlanta, Ga.
Awarded: $20,000
Purpose: This grant supports Camp Best Friends, a summer camp held at The First Tee John A. White Park. The summer camp is expected to reach 150 economically-disadvantaged youths and meets five days a week for eight weeks. TFT John A. White also operates after-school programming and weekend clinics, reaching 1,100 youths total. Funds will be used for instruction.

Muscogee Junior Golf Academy
Columbus, Ga.
Awarded: $25,000
Purpose: This grant supports course access and instruction expenses for its beginner and intermediate/ advanced programs, which each meet once a week for an entire year. MJGA plans on reaching 150 youths in its new beginner program. Additionally, MJGA plans on reaching 50 youths in its intermediate/advanced program. To follow their motto, "Grades Up, Scores Down," the advanced program aims to develop youth by preparing them for college golf through both strong academic and tournament records.

Project One Junior Golf Academy, Inc.
Atlanta, Ga.
Awarded: $10,500
Purpose: This grant will help support the expansion of the Project One Junior Golf Academyprogramming to reach 100 participants in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Specifically, USGA funds will support after -school programming as well as weekend range and course access opportunities by assisting with instruction and the cost of green fees. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit the PGA Tour's BellSouth Classic and attend other area clinics while receiving reserved starting times on weekends at a variety of Atlanta area courses.

Purpose: This grant supports the expansion from a pilot program to a formal junior golf program reaching 100 economically-disadvantaged youths. Programming will operate once a week for 38 weeks. Funds will be used for equipment and access.

Program for Individuals with Disabilities

Sonny Ackerman Adaptive Sports Foundation
Suwanee, Ga.
Awarded: $50,000
Purpose: This two-year grant supports two-day workshops for PGA professionals and therapists, which teach them the therapeutic benefits of golf for individuals with disabilities. The attendees then take the knowledge learned and help maintain monthly clinics at various locations, primarily across the southeastern region of the United States. The grant will assist with instruction expenses as the program undergoes expansion of the two-day workshops and the regularly scheduled monthly clinics.

Junior Golf Programs

City of Greensboro
Greensboro, N.C.
Awarded: $5,500
Purpose: This grant supports instruction and transportation for the TYGR PAWS golf program. Through this program, area youth take part in summer clinics meeting once a week for seven weeks. A total of 300 youths will participate in this program.

The First Tee Chapter of the Sandhills, Inc.
Vass, N.C.
Awarded: $15,000
Purpose: This grant will enable The First Tee of the Sandhills to offer PGA instruction year-round to 100 youths within the Sandhills region of North Carolina. The First Tee of the Sandhills is also implementing after-school programming in 12 elementary schools and six middle schools reaching nearly 3,240 youths. USGA funds will specifically be allocated to course and driving range access for the year-round programming.

Purpose: This challenge grant supports a pilot program, which will meet two days a week for six weeks. Programming will reach 60 youths, of which the majority are beginner golfers, on the free-or-reduced lunch program and African-American. Funds will be used for course access and golf clubs and bags.

Purpose: This grant will assist TFT Spartanburg with course access and instruction costs for its First Swings golf program. Programming will operate four days a week in one week sessions throughout the summer and reach 180 economically disadvantaged youths. TFT Spartanburg will expand on programming this coming year by offering a structured life skills component and TFT Par level curriculum.

Purpose: This grant supports a pilot program, which will reach 211 fourth and fifth grade economically disadvantaged students. The majority of participants will be beginner golfers, on the free-or-reduced lunch program, and African American. Programming will operate during school hours, once a week for nine weeks, and consist of two trips to a local golf course. USGA funds will be used for course access and golf clubs and bags.
