Junior Golf Programs

City of St. Petersburg
Awarded: $23,994
Purpose: This grant will help support the expansion of the City of St. Petersburg and Academy Prep's junior golf program. Specifically, USGA funds will support the creation of an afterschool program to complement the existing summer program by assisting with equipment, course and driving range access, and partial instruction costs. Academy Prep is a tuition free private, multifaceted learning center offering many programs designed to give economically disadvantaged youth a chance for success. 120 youths, primarily from the target redevelopment areas of St. Petersburg, will be reached through these summer and afterschool programs.

Puerto Rico Golf Association
Awarded: $13,000
Purpose: This grant supports "Golf Para Todos," which translates to "Golf For Everyone," a program exposing 160 economically disadvantaged youths from the Boys & Girls Club in Las Margaritas and high school students in Rio Grande. Fundamentals of the game will be taught and students will be transported to local courses for instruction and course access opportunities.

Golf Facilities

The First Tee of Birmingham
Birmingham, Ala.

Purpose: This grant will support irrigation, shaping, and bunker costs associated with the construction of a nine-hole, par-35 and six-hole, par-3 course. The renovation construction will take place at Cooper Green Park, which is the former location of the only golf course for African-Americans in Birmingham prior to civil rights laws.

Purpose: This grant supports the Junior Golf program at the YMCA of Pratville, which is hoping to introduce 160 kids to the game in 2002. Purpose: Challenge grant to support turfgrass maintenance program. Purpose: This challenge grant will support equipment, intern wages, and mechanic wages for South Fork High School's turfgrass maintenance program. This program will reach 102 students through an intensive year-round, hands-on continuous learning experience.

Purpose: This unique grant will support costs associated with a Junior Coordinator for the FSGA Junior Golf Program. Purpose: This grant will be used to assist with instruction expenses for Diamonds In the Rough Foundation's (DIR) summer and afterschool programming. Children's Golf Foundation, Inc.

Purpose: This grant supports instruction, transportation, adaptive golf equipment and golf clubs for the Children’s Golf Foundation’s programming. The program introduces golf to youth with a variety of disabilities. CGF projects reaching 500 youths and providing them with instruction and course access at their recently-completed, fully-accessible golf facility.

Purpose: This grant supports the Disabled Golfers of Floride program, which provides instructional opportunities for individuals with disabilities throughout the state of Florida. The Golf Association of Florida will also run a series of tournaments through this program that will pair individuals with disabilities with able-bodied players. Purpose: This grant supports partial access, instruction, and equipment costs for Smart School’s junior golf program. With this grant, Smart School will reach 75 youths in its 10-month after-school program, which includes golf instruction, course play, and tutoring/life skill development.

Muscogee Junior Golf Academy

Purpose: This grant supports course access and instruction expenses for 40 economically disadvantaged and minority youths. To follow their motto, "Grades Up, Scores Down," this program aims to develop youth with competitive golf aspirations by preparing them as college-ready players with both strong academic and tournament records.

Program for Individuals with Disabilities

Adaptive Golf Foundation

Purpose: This grant will support instructional expenses at 25-30 adaptive golf clinics for individuals with disabilities. Clinics are held across the country and focus on training techniques for physical and recreational therapists to teach their patients. 2,400 individuals with disabilities will be reached by their therapists and PGA and LPGA Teaching Professionals through these golf clinics.

Mississippi


Golf Facilities

Alcorn State University Foundation
Alcorn State, Miss.
Awarded: $0
Purpose: The Alcorn State University Foundation was awarded $12,000 to help fund the equipment costs associated with the operation of the driving range at their new Agri-Golf Center. The University, a Historically Black College/University, is the first HBCU to build a golf facility on campus, and will offer First Tee programming to area youth. There is currently no public facility in the immediate three-county area where Alcorn State University is located. Upon its completion, the Agri-Golf Center will house an 18 hole regulation course, a three-hole short course, as well as a driving range, club house, practice facility and learning center. The University will offer educational programs for its students such as Turf-Grass Management and Professional Golf Management using the facility.

Purpose: This grant will support instruction, access and transportation for the school district's golf program. This will be the second year for the golf program in the McComb School District, which is offered through the PE curriculum. The program hopes to expand from the high school into the middle school this year and reach a total of approximately 250 students.

Purpose: This grant is in support of the Golf First Step programs, which introduces underprivileged kids to the game through instruction and course access. USGA funds will be used to cover general programming expenses.

Purpose: This grant supports the expansion of their year-round junior golf program. In the upcoming year, there will be three distinct levels of programming, with the advanced level having the opportunity to play in competitions between this organization and other housing authorities' golf programs throughout the state. Purpose: This grant is in support of this newly-formed junior golf organization. In particular, USGA funds will go toward instruction and course and range access for this organization's summer golf programming, which targets youth from economically-disadvantaged backgrounds from youth agencies such as local YMCAs, Police Athletic Leagues and Big Brothers/Big Sisters programs. This summer, the projected reach for these programs is 240 youths.

Triad Youth Golf Foundation

Purpose: This grant is in support of junior golf programs that reach youth from economically-disadvantaged backgrounds, offering them instruction and time on the course. In particular, the Little League Golf program puts youth on six-person teams that play in matches against other teams, in a fun format that is to mirror youth baseball programs. Funds will be used for range and course access, instruction and golf equipment.

Purpose: This grant supports Target Golf-Growing the Game in Union County, which involves programming for social service agencies and the local parks and recreation department. Purpose: This grant supports course access, instruction, and other costs associated with developing Pacesetters Junior Golf in nine middle schools across four counties in western North Carolina. Pacesetters will reach 200 youths, most of whom are considered "at-risk," with the help of this grant.

Purpose: This grant will support instruction and access costs for Tidewater Youth Golf Association's junior programming.
