Regional Associations

The USGA headquartered in Far Hills, N.J., cannot govern the game without the support, cooperation and unending efforts of state, regional and district associations throughout the United States.

Along with 1,300 volunteers, the USGA relies upon the service of 145 administrators who manage associations serving millions of amateur golfers. Associations do the "heavy work" - implementing the USGA Course Rating & Handicap Systems, conducting qualifying for national, state, and district competitions for players of all abilities and ages, conducting educational programs on the Rules of Golf,  applying the Rules of Amateurism, and acting as a clearing house for a myriad of services - all benefiting golfers and the game. The partnership of the USGA and these associations is critical to the state of golf.

The USGA is committed in its support of these associations. Assistance is offered in several ways: through education programs - computer, Course Rating/Handicap, Rules, and turfgrass; and  financial grants - the funding of P.J. Boatwright Jr Interns, which brings hundreds of well-educated young people into the administration of the game.

Associations are also supported by the USGA staff.  This effort is headed by Senior Director Tony Zirpoli and the Regional Affairs department - nine dedicated regional directors and supportive staff, located in regional offices.  They work tirelessly to maintain a liaison, to communicate, and to consult and be supportive of associations.  This outreach program has proven highly successful in strengthening relationships that benefit the game throughout
the country.
