With the level of junior golf improving every year and with a large number of juniors hoping to play on the college level, as well as the participation of thousands of players in collegiate golf each year, the mission of the Intercollegiate Relations Committee remains as important and vital as ever.
This mission is to keep the lines of communication between the USGA and college golf open and strong.
In order to execute its mission, members of the Intercollegiate Relations Committee, college coaches and representatives of the NCAA met on Kiawah Island, S.C., in December 2007.
During the meeting, matters of mutual concern were discussed. As usual, amateur status issues took up a large portion of the meeting. With some differences between the USGA Rules of Amateur Status, which were dramatically modified in 2006, and the NCAA Code of Amateurism, all the attendees worked diligently to narrow the existing differences. Other issues such as the Walker Cup Match, pace of play and the Rules were also discussed.
All involved in this meeting agreed that a positive working relationship and atmosphere has evolved from these sessions. All present look forward to continuing the positive dialogue and keeping the lines of communication open between the USGA and college golf.
