The championship season began with a thrilling U.S. Open at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club as Angel Cabrera finished at 5-over-par 285 to win by a single stroke over Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk.
Colt Knost, 22, captured two USGA titles last summer. He first won the U.S. Amateur Public Links at Cantigny G.C. in Wheaton, Ill., defeating Cody Paladino in the final, 6 and 4. Six weeks later, Knost won the U.S. Amateur on the Lake Course at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, defeating Michael Thompson in the final, 2 and 1.
In the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Ky., Mina Harigae, 17, defeated Stephany Fleet, 4 and 3, in the final.
Cristie Kerr won the U.S. Women's Open at Pine Needles Lodge & G.C. in Southern Pines, N.C. Kerr finished at
5-under-par 279, two strokes ahead of Lorena Ochoa and Angela Park.
Brad Bryant captured his first USGA title, finishing at six under par to forge a three-stroke win over Ben Crenshaw in the U.S. Senior Open at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis.
Kristen Park, 14, won the U.S. Girls' Junior in her first match-play event with a 4-and-3 win over Ayaka Kaneko, 17, in the final at Tacoma Country and Golf Club in Lakewood, Wash.
Cory Whitsett, 15, defeated Anthony Paolucci, 14, in the final, 8 and 7, to win the U.S. Junior Amateur at Boone Valley G.C. in Augusta, Mo.
Maria Uribe of Colombia became the 12th foreign player to win the U.S. Women's Amateur when she edged Amanda Blumenherst, 1 up, in the final at Crooked Stick G.C. in Carmel, Ind.
Anna Schultz, a two-time runner-up in USGA championships, won the Senior Women's Amateur. She defeated Robyn Puckett on the 20th hole of the final at the Meadows Course at the Sunriver (Ore.) Resort.
Stan Lee, 55, became the youngest winner of the USGA Senior Amateur when he defeated Sam Farlow, 4 and 3, at Flint Hills National G.C. in Andover, Kan.
Meghan Bolger won her second consecutive U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur title, defeating Kerry Postillion, 1 up, in the final at Desert Forest G.C. in Carefree, Ariz.
Trip Kuehne, runner-up in the 1994 U.S. Amateur, won his first USGA title in the U.S. Mid-Amateur at Bandon Dunes (Ore.) Golf Resort. Kuehne defeated Dan Whitaker in the final, 9 and 7.
Kuehne was also a member of the winning Texas team, rounded out by Jonathan Mathias and Terrence Miskell, in the USGA State Team Championship at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas. Arizona won the USGA Women's State Team Championship with Thuhashini Selvaratnam, Kayla Mortellaro and Judy Miller.
And the USA Walker Cup team prevailed over Great Britain & Ireland with a narrow 12 o 11 ictory at Royal County Down G.C. in Northern Ireland.
The Association is grateful to the clubs and courses for hosting these national championships, as well as to the many courses which hosted USGA qualifying.
