Mark E. Newell
Mark E. Newell, of McLean, Va., is in his second year as a member of the USGA Executive Committee and first as treasurer. He served as general counsel to the USGA in 2011 and 2012.
Newell received a bachelor’s degree from Albion College in 1977. In 1981, he received both a Master of Public Policy degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. While at Harvard, Newell served as editor and treasurer of the Harvard Law Review.
Newell is retired from Latham & Watkins LLP, having served as the vice chairman and chief operating partner from 2002-2011. He served on the firm’s executive committee from 1999-2011, and was managing partner of the Latham & Watkins Washington D.C. office from 1993-2000. Newell previously served as a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell Jr. from 1982-1983.
In 2014, Newell will chair the Rules of Golf Committee, and will also serve on the Compensation, Equipment Standards, Finance, Handicap, Joint Equipment Standards and Joint Rules of Golf Committees.
