Mark E. Newell

Mark E. Newell, of McLean, Va., is in his first year as a member of the USGA Executive Committee. He served as general counsel to the USGA in 2011 and 2012.
Newell received a bachelor’s degree from Albion College in 1977. In 1981, he received both a Master of Public Policy degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School. While at Harvard, Newell served as editor and treasurer of the Harvard Law Review.
Newell is retired from Latham & Watkins LLP, having served as the vice chairman and chief operating partner from 2002 to 2011. He served on the firm’s executive committee from 1999-2011, and was managing partner of the Latham & Watkins Washington D.C. office from 1993-2000. Newell previously served as a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell Jr. from 1982 to 1983.
In 2013, Newell will chair the Handicap and Rules of Golf Committees, will co-chair the Joint Rules of Golf Committee and will also serve on the Audit, Compensation, Equipment Standards and Joint Equipment Standards Committees.
