Walker Cup Memories: Davis Love III
|Before going onto PGA Tour stardom, Davis Love III helped the 1985 USA Walker Cup Team post a two-point win at Pine Valley. (USGA/Darren Carroll)
Davis Love III was a member of the victorious 1985 USA Walker Cup Team that produced a 13-11 victory at Pine Valley (N.J.) Golf Club. Love was 2-0-1, including a 5-and-3 singles victory over Peter McEvoy. Love would go on to win the 1997 PGA Championship and serve as a Ryder Cup captain.
What do you remember about playing in the Walker Cup?
The first thing that comes to mind is that it was a dream to make the team. To play with guys like Jay Sigel and Scott Verplank ... it was a huge goal of mine for 1983 and '85. It was a bigger goal than anything else. I wanted to win the U.S. Amateur, but my biggest goal was go make the Walker Cup team, and I was really excited when I did make it. That got me started on my team experience.
Was there anything that stood out that week?
Jay's leadership [as playing captain] was always important to me. And I enjoyed being on that team because of him and goofy guys like Sam Randolph and Clark Burroughs and Duffy Waldorf -- goofy being a compliment because they were great teammates. I remember going out and watching Sam and Scott finish in singles and just the camaraderie of it all. Then there was just the atmosphere. I mean, Pine Valley and the Walker Cup .... it was the dream Walker Cup in just about every way you can imagine.
