Gilhuly has been associated with the game of golf since 1959 as a player, caddie and golf course maintenance worker. After receiving an Evans Caddie Scholarship in 1970, he majored in Agronomy, Turf Science and holds a B.S. degree from Washington State University.

After college, he worked as the assistant superintendent at Seattle Golf Club from 1975-1983. He joined the USGA Green Section in 1983 as the Western Director. Gilhuly currently provides agronomic advice to golf courses in the Northwest Region with Hawaii, Oregon and Washington his primary focus. British Columbia also receives TAS visits from his Gig Harbor, Wash., based office.

In addition to assisting golf courses in their turf management programs, he also helps conduct several conferences within the Northwest region, assists various groups in fund raising efforts and is involved in several educational programs that are directed at golfers in the Pacific Northwest.

Since 2000 he has been the golf coach for the boys' and girls' golf team at Peninsula High School.
